Francisco Javier Banderas has spent years racing against the King of Spain on the water, and in August 2024, he beat him. His boat took the Copa del Rey MAPFRE, Spain’s biggest sailing regatta, by five and a half points over the Spanish Navy’s entry, sailed by King Felipe VI himself. The man who did it runs a theater in Málaga, administers his brother’s television company, and is usually introduced, when he’s mentioned at all, as the brother of actor Antonio Banderas.
That framing may be exactly why so little about him has been reported correctly. His birth year has been reported wrong more than once, and his brother had to issue a public correction earlier this month after outlets confused him with a stranger. Treating him as background noise to someone else’s fame seems to be the reason nobody has bothered to check.

A Working Partnership
His full legal name, Francisco Javier Domínguez Bandera, comes from his father, José Domínguez Prieto, a Civil Guard officer, and his mother, Ana Bandera Gallego, a schoolteacher. Both died before the theater and its related businesses became the brothers’ main shared occupation, José in 2008 and Ana in 2017. Family members call him “Chico,” and in private he calls his brother José, using Antonio’s actual first name rather than the stage name the world knows.
The two have run ventures together since the 1990s, and not all of them worked. A restaurant chain launched in 2001 did not last. A planned theater at Madrid’s Príncipe Pío station collapsed the following year, reportedly at a cost of around a million dollars. A Moto2 racing team the brothers backed together in 2010 lasted a single season.
What survived is Teatro del Soho CaixaBank, the theater Antonio opened in Málaga in 2019 inside the city’s former Teatro Alameda building, along with its television arm, Teatro Soho Televisión, and a hospitality group called Grupo Tercer Acto. Javier runs all three as general administrator, the job that keeps them operating while Antonio directs and stars in the productions. He also sits on the boards of two family foundations that help fund the theater’s operating costs.
An Age Nobody Could Agree On
Javier Banderas was born in 1964, four years after Antonio. TheObjective and Semana both confirmed the year when they covered his brother’s July 2026 statement.
Getting there took a while. OKDiario printed 1962 as his birth year in a 2025 report that also described him, a few lines later, as turning 60 that same August and being born four years after his brother, numbers that actually point to 1964 instead. Earlier coverage elsewhere had floated other years entirely. None of that confusion touches his sailing results, which are tracked publicly, year by year, through regatta standings rather than guesswork.
His Record at the Copa del Rey
He got into sailing in his late teens, right after finishing military service, then stepped away from the sport for a stretch. He returned with more focus in 1996 following a health scare earlier in the decade that pushed him to rethink how he spent his time. He debuted at the Copa del Rey MAPFRE the following year and has not missed a single edition since.
The wins came slowly at first. His first class title arrived in 2009, 12 years after his debut, followed by another in 2010. Titles in 2017 and 2018 came next, then a run of four straight years, 2021 through 2024, that included the win over King Felipe VI’s boat described above. That streak ended in August 2025, when his team competed in Palma de Mallorca but did not finish among the winners, leaving his total at eight titles and 14 podium finishes overall. In 2026, the Andalusian Sailing Federation awarded him its Gold Badge, one of the region’s top honors in the sport.
The Same Mistake, Three Years Running
On July 1, 2026, Antonio Banderas posted a statement calling a recurring error “preocupante,” Spanish for worrying. For the third year in a row, he said, outlets had confused his brother with an unrelated person who appears on Spain’s public list of major tax debtors, someone whose name only loosely resembles his. He asked reporters directly to use the correct name going forward.
A quieter version of the same problem shows up in his film credits. His only confirmed producer credit is for the Spanish talk show Las tres puertas, for four episodes in 2022. His appearance in a 2025 documentary about the musical Gypsy at Teatro del Soho is credited as himself, not as producer, a distinction that gets lost whenever his work is summed up as film producing in general terms.
His wife, María Ángeles, and their two sons rarely appear in any of this coverage at all. The elder son, Víctor, has competed in national swimming championships. The younger, also named Javier, took up sailing like his father. Beyond that, little about the family is public. His own Instagram account is private, with fewer than 5,000 followers, an odd footnote for a man whose closest business partner has spent three decades as one of the most photographed people in the world.
The Copa del Rey returns to Palma de Mallorca this August. He will be there again, still chasing a ninth title after coming up short in 2025, sailing a new boat introduced in Málaga this past June. His brother has already asked reporters to get his name right this time. Getting the rest of his record right would be a reasonable place to start too.
