In the summer of 1964, Mark West earned his private pilot’s licence at San Fernando Airport in California and took a girl named Tina Hargitay up as his first passenger. He went on to teach flying, serve thirteen months as a Marine recon scout in Vietnam, and spend twenty-five years as a federal air traffic controller. In every profile written about her famous family, she went on to become two words: Mariska’s sister.
That is not close to the full story.

Who Is Tina Hargitay?
Tina Hargitay is the oldest child of Mickey Hargitay, the Hungarian-born bodybuilder who won Mr. Universe in 1955 and later married actress Jayne Mansfield. She was born in 1949 to Mickey and his first wife, Mary Birge, making her the half-sister of actress Mariska Hargitay on their father’s side. She is 76 or 77 years old as of 2026, has never given a public interview, and has lived most of her adult life in northern Idaho.
Her name comes up almost exclusively as a footnote in coverage of her half-sister. The actual record of her life tells a different story.
Before Jayne Mansfield: Mickey Hargitay’s First Family
Mickey Hargitay arrived in the United States from Budapest, Hungary, in 1947 and settled in Cleveland, Ohio. He found work as a carpenter and plumber and married Mary Birge in 1948. Tina was born the following year. He was in his early twenties, working for wages, with no public profile of any kind.
Six years later, the picture had changed completely.
By 1955, Hargitay had won the Mr. Universe title and was performing in Mae West’s touring revue. He met Jayne Mansfield the following year. His marriage to Mary Birge ended in divorce on September 6, 1956. He married Mansfield on January 13, 1958.
Tina Hargitay was seven when her parents divorced and nine when her father married one of the most photographed actresses in the world. She was raised by her mother, separate from the Pink Palace mansion on Sunset Boulevard, the Hollywood film roles, and the celebrity coverage that surrounded her father for the next four decades.
From Mickey’s marriage to Mansfield came three more children:
- Mickey Hargitay Jr., born December 21, 1958
- Zoltan Hargitay, born August 1, 1960
- Mariska Hargitay, born January 23, 1964
Tina is fifteen years older than Mariska. They share a father. That is where the shared biography ends.
Tina Hargitay and Mariska Hargitay: The Half-Sister Relationship
Mariska Hargitay has starred as Olivia Benson on NBC’s Law and Order: Special Victims Unit since 1999, winning a Primetime Emmy Award and a Golden Globe for the role across twenty-seven seasons. She is among the most recognized faces in American television.
Despite different mothers, different childhoods, and a fifteen-year age difference, Tina and Mariska are reported to have maintained a genuine relationship. Contact between the two has been through private channels, including a Facebook presence Tina keeps away from public view.
The clearest public confirmation of their bond came on November 8, 2013, when Tina travelled from Sandpoint, Idaho, to attend Mariska’s Hollywood Walk of Fame star ceremony in Los Angeles. She stood with Mickey Jr., Zoltan, and stepmother Ellen Siano in front of cameras she had no interest in. More on that day in a section below.
The Man Tina Hargitay Married
Mark Stephen West was born on August 30, 1946, in Glendale, California. After graduating from Franklin High School in 1964, he earned his private pilot’s licence and worked as a flight instructor at San Fernando Airport, helping dozens of students get their wings.
He was then drafted into the United States Marine Corps and served thirteen months as a recon scout in the Republic of Vietnam before receiving an honourable discharge in 1971. In the mid-1970s, he married Tina Marie Hargitay. His obituary notes that she had been his first passenger when he earned his pilot’s licence years earlier.
He joined the Federal Aviation Administration and worked as an air traffic controller for twenty-five years, starting in Los Angeles. The family relocated to Sandpoint, Idaho, in 1996. After retiring, Mark worked as a real estate agent at Realty Plus and as a tax preparer at H&R Block, where locals considered him one of the better ones in the area.
He died unexpectedly at their Sandpoint home on June 14, 2011. He was sixty-four years old. The marriage had lasted thirty-five years.
The Murder of Christopher West, Sandpoint, 2005
In August 2005, Tina and Mark’s son Christopher West was killed in Sandpoint. He was twenty-five years old.
Christopher had gone alone to Evergreen Towing on Great Northern Road on the night of August 20 to work on his pickup truck. Two local men, Kenneth Thurlow and Christopher Lewers, arrived at the garage armed with concealed shotguns. Christopher was shot in the head. His body was found by a caretaker at the property the following morning.
What the courts found:
- Kenneth Thurlow, then 45, was convicted of first-degree murder by a Bonner County jury in 2006 and sentenced to life in prison without parole
- Christopher Lewers, then 22, entered a plea agreement and was sentenced to twenty years to life in November 2007
- Both men appealed their sentences; both appeals were rejected by the Idaho Court of Appeals
Sandpoint Police Chief Mark Lockwood described the motive as drug-related. No formal motive was ever established in either trial.
Christopher West left behind a four-year-old son named Dakota. A trust fund in Dakota’s name was opened at Horizon Credit Union on Fifth Avenue in Sandpoint within days of the killing.
Two More Deaths: Mickey Hargitay in 2006, Mark West in 2011
Fourteen months after Christopher’s murder, Mickey Hargitay died in Los Angeles on September 14, 2006, from bone cancer. He was eighty years old.
Five years after that, Mark West died at their home in Sandpoint on June 14, 2011. He was sixty-four.
Tina Hargitay buried her son, her father, and her husband within six years. None of it was reported. She gave no interviews. She issued no statements.
The Hollywood Walk of Fame, November 8, 2013
The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce unveiled Mariska Hargitay’s star at 6328 Hollywood Blvd on the morning of November 8, 2013, and placed it directly beside the existing star of Jayne Mansfield. The positioning was deliberate and announced in advance. Speakers at the ceremony included Hilary Swank and Law and Order creator Dick Wolf. It was the 2,511th star in the television category.
Tina Hargitay drove down from Idaho and stood with the family. She was beside Mickey Jr., Zoltan, Jayne Marie Mansfield, and Ellen Siano for a ceremony that placed Mariska’s star next to the woman who had been Mickey Hargitay’s second wife, Tina’s half-siblings’ mother, and, by any common definition, a stranger to Tina herself.
Most wire photo captions from that day did not include her name.
She came anyway.
Where Is Tina Hargitay Now?
As of 2026, Tina Hargitay West lives in Idaho. She maintains contact with her half-siblings through a private Facebook presence and has been present at local family events, including her grandson Dakota West’s football games. Her daughter Natalie Pringle and son Jeff West are based in the Sandpoint area.
She has given no interviews and holds no public profile. At seventy-six, that appears to be exactly the arrangement she prefers.
Her father became one of the most photographed men in America. Her half-sister has been on network television for twenty-seven years. Tina Hargitay was born a carpenter’s daughter in Cleveland and spent her adult life as a Marine’s wife on the Idaho panhandle, and the record of that life, with everything it contains, has been sitting in court documents and local newspapers the whole time. She was never hiding. Nobody was looking.
