Spencer Margaret Richmond was not backstage at a Broadway theater on May 29, 2025, when her mother, Jaclyn Smith, posed for a photo with Richmond’s former husband, Fran Kranz. Kranz was appearing that spring in “Good Night, and Good Luck,” four years after his marriage to Smith’s daughter had legally ended. The photo’s caption identified him as Smith’s former son-in-law.
Richmond, the one person who had connected the two of them in the first place, was nowhere in it. She rarely is.
Richmond was born in Los Angeles on December 4, 1985, the younger of two children from her mother’s eight-year marriage to cinematographer Anthony B. Richmond, whose credits include shooting the Beatles’ “Let It Be” and a BAFTA win for “Don’t Look Now.” Her older brother, Gaston, was born in 1982. Smith, best known for playing Kelly Garrett on “Charlie’s Angels,” later built a clothing line that stayed on Kmart shelves for 36 years.

For much of her twenties, Richmond turned up beside her mother at industry events: the Los Angeles premiere of “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” in 2001, the “Charlie’s Angels” sequel premiere two years later, a Broadway opening night in 2014. Richmond and Kranz married on August 15, 2015, having gone to the same elementary and high schools in Los Angeles years before reconnecting at a party in the Hollywood Hills. He proposed with a 100-year-old Tiffany sapphire ring, around the time she was working as a yoga instructor and studying Ayurvedic medicine.
They chose to marry outside Los Angeles. The couple was living in Venice at the time, and Richmond told the magazine they “wanted to be married somewhere outside the city, so Santa Barbara was the obvious choice.”
The ceremony took place at All Saints-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Montecito, where Kranz’s own grandparents had married decades earlier. The reception followed at the Valley Club of Montecito:

“It might have been the highlight of the wedding,” Richmond said. “It was the happiest we have ever been.”
Motherhood and a family clothing line
Richmond and Kranz had one child, a daughter named Bea, born September 17, 2016. A year later, on Bea’s first birthday, Richmond and her mother launched Spencer by Jaclyn Smith, a line of infant clothing sold exclusively at Kmart. It remains Richmond’s only public career project. The line ran until 2021, when Smith’s Kmart partnership ended.
A divorce, five days after Sundance
Richmond filed for divorce from Kranz on July 6, 2020. It was finalized on February 4, 2021, five days after “Mass,” Kranz’s writing and directing debut, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Kranz told Deadline that becoming a father had shaped the film, which centers on two sets of parents meeting years after a tragedy involving their sons.
The divorce did not end contact between the two families. Four years later, on May 29, 2025, Smith appeared backstage with Kranz again, this time at his run in “Good Night, and Good Luck” on Broadway.
Her brother left the industry too
Richmond’s older brother, Gaston, spent years working in the camera and production departments on films including “Annabelle” (2014), “The Kids Are All Right” (2010), and “Chasing Mavericks” (2012). He then left the industry, moved to a small town in Virginia, and opened a restaurant called Local Cut. Their mother, in a 2025 interview, called the move “very brave.” Gaston remarried in 2023, in a ceremony Smith attended alongside her former “Charlie’s Angels” co-star Kate Jackson.
He and his wife have two daughters: Olivia Rose Richmond, born in April 2019, and Wren Jaclyn Richmond, born in April 2023 and named after their grandmother.
Correcting the record on her children
As of August 2026, one of Google’s AI-generated answers for a search on her name states that Richmond and Kranz have two daughters, Bea and a second child named Olivia Rose. A few results down, a second AI-generated answer, this one about Gaston, correctly lists Olivia Rose as his daughter instead. Both appear on the same search results page, about the same family.
That same misattribution has spread alongside other unverifiable claims. Specific net worth figures circulating for Richmond trace to no public filing or disclosure, and despite her mother’s active Instagram presence, Richmond does not appear to keep a public account of her own.
The actual count is easy to check. Olivia Rose Richmond, born in April 2019, is Gaston’s daughter. So is Wren Jaclyn Richmond, born in April 2023. Wikipedia’s entry for Kranz lists exactly one child. Hello! Magazine’s April 2026 profile of the family lists Richmond as mother to one daughter, Bea, and separately lists both nieces as Gaston’s. At the Paley Honors gala that May, Jaclyn Smith told Fox News her family now includes “two beautiful children, three granddaughters,” a count that only holds together if Bea belongs to Richmond and the other two belong to Gaston.
She isn’t a mother of two. She has one daughter.
