A Texas judge signed off on the divorce between Rebecca Liddicoat and Robert Griffin III in late May 2017. Weeks later she filed to have the settlement thrown out.
Her argument was that Griffin had not paid her share of a house the couple bought together in 2016. They paid $2.2 million for the property in Montgomery County. By that summer it appraised above $3 million, and she wanted her half before any agreement stood. Griffin said he needed time to have the place valued properly. He agreed to pay her in full by the end of July.
The house was one of several disputes in a case that opened in September 2016 and was still producing filings two years later.

How Rebecca Liddicoat met Robert Griffin III
She grew up in Boulder, Colorado. The two met as students at Baylor University in Waco, where Griffin was on his way to the 2011 Heisman Trophy.
He proposed on October 23, 2010, a few hours after throwing for 404 yards and four touchdowns against Kansas State on homecoming. His father passed him the ring. He put candles through Baylor’s indoor practice facility, had a teammate play guitar, and asked her in front of both families. In comments published by Heavy.com, she said Griffin had been “acting kind of strange, driving slow” on the way there, stalling and finding reasons to delay, and that she had not seen it coming. Griffin, describing it to reporters, said she said yes and cried.
Washington took him second overall in April 2012, and she was on the stage at Radio City Music Hall with his family when the pick came in.
The wedding, and the years in Washington
Through 2012 and 2013 she turned up in the wire photo record fairly often: training camp in Ashburn, the ESPY Awards in Los Angeles, a Baylor game at Cowboys Stadium, NFL Honors in New Orleans. Photographers filed her as Griffin’s fiancee through 2012. By the fall of 2013 the captions read wife.
They married on July 6, 2013 at the Four Seasons in Denver, a short drive from Boulder. The rehearsal dinner was at Mike Shanahan’s steakhouse with 30 to 40 guests, according to the Denver Post. Team owner Dan Snyder attended, along with Baylor coach Art Briles and a group of Washington teammates that included Kirk Cousins, Alfred Morris and London Fletcher. Wale was booked to perform. Griffin’s father was best man and her sister was maid of honor.
Fans had found the couple’s Bed Bath & Beyond registry before the wedding and bought most of it, including a $15 welcome mat. The two of them answered with handwritten thank you notes.
Their daughter, Reese Ann Griffin, was born on May 21, 2015, at 7 pounds 9 ounces.
How the marriage ended
Griffin was starting for the Cleveland Browns by the summer of 2016. On August 16, cleveland.com reported he was ending the marriage. The couple had been separated for months.
He filed in Texas on September 7, citing discord or conflict of personalities that left no reasonable expectation of reconciliation. The petition asked that Liddicoat have primary physical custody of Reese and said he would pay child support.
Coverage at the time connected the split to Griffin’s relationship with Florida State athlete Grete Sadeiko, whom he first contacted on Instagram in January 2016. He answered that on Twitter on September 24: “Set the record straight. My marriage failed. No home wrecking/cheating.”
Liddicoat said nothing publicly. Her attorneys filed her answer the following month, denying Griffin’s petition point by point and asking the court to make him cover her legal costs.
What the prenup did not cover
Griffin wanted the case out of open court. He pointed to the prenuptial agreement the two had signed before the wedding, which sent any dispute arising from that agreement to a private arbitrator.
Her lawyers argued that child custody and child support had never been part of the document and could not be handled that way. The case stayed in court, and a judge issued the decree the following May.
Two houses and no income
By the spring of 2017 the two sides were still in front of a judge on money. Reese was days short of turning two. Her mother had no earnings of her own and no working credit card, because Griffin had cut off the American Express Platinum she had been using.
Court records from that May show Rebecca Liddicoat carrying two properties, the house in Montgomery County and another in Aldie, Virginia. She told the court she could not cover the water, electricity, gas, cable, landscaping or pool service on either one. The figure she gave for running both homes and raising her daughter came to close to $36,000 a month.
That number has circulated for years as the child support Griffin was ordered to pay. It was the amount she told the court she needed, and no public ruling matches it. His own September 2016 petition had already said he would pay support, without naming a sum.
The account that used her name
In late November 2016 an account calling itself Rebecca Griffin appeared on Twitter and accused Griffin of cheating. Sports blogs picked up the posts and ran them as hers.
Complex reported within days that the account was not genuine. Griffin’s first wife had never used his surname, and the posts dated the affair to July 2013, the month of the wedding and more than two years before Griffin and Sadeiko had any contact. Griffin posted his own reply: “A lie will get half way around the world before the truth.” By the time Complex published, the account had been taken down.
The 2018 custody filing
Liddicoat went back to court in October 2018, asking a judge to keep Griffin’s visits with Reese inside her Texas county during the football season and to route the parents’ communication through a co-parenting app. Griffin contested it and said the request belonged in arbitration under their agreement. What the judge decided has never been reported.

Where Rebecca Liddicoat is now
Griffin married Sadeiko in Miami in March 2018, seven months before that last filing. They have three daughters together, and he speaks about all four of his children freely. He told People in July 2024 that raising girls changes your perspective on life. He posted for Reese’s tenth birthday in May 2025, calling her an amazing big sister to her three little sisters. In a joint interview with Texas Lifestyle Magazine this February, he named all four girls and their ages.
Reese turned eleven in May. Her mother has never given an interview about the marriage or the divorce, and little of her life outside it has been reported anywhere. No account of a remarriage has appeared since the 2018 filing.
