The singer has said almost nothing about her private life for decades. Then a stranger’s video called the father of her five oldest children a tyrant.
Lauryn Hill does not talk about her private life. At the end of August she made an exception, in a comment several paragraphs long, posted underneath a stranger’s video.
“I might agree with some of the self depreciation part, there are reasons for that, but while Rohan and I were in a relationship I was NOT being done dirty,” Hill wrote, in a comment quoted by Essence, Complex and TheGrio. “My upset had layers, my upset with him had to do with his unwillingness to confront HIS trauma in order to grow and keep our family together.”
The video came from a Nigerian content creator who posts as Mayowa’s World. She had gone through Hill’s years with Rohan Marley and reached a harsh conclusion. He had five children with Hill and never married her, Mayowa said, then married other women once it was over. Calling him a tyrant, she played a clip of Hill in tears during her 2001 MTV Unplugged set.
Hill has never legally married anyone. She has also referred to Marley as her husband for years, in interviews and in her own posts. Her comment in August was the fullest account she has given of how both of those things fit together.

Who Rohan Marley is
Rohan Anthony Marley was born in Kingston in May 1972, the son of Bob Marley and Janet Hunt. His father died when he was nine. Raised between Jamaica and Florida, he graduated from Miami Palmetto Senior High School and played linebacker at the University of Miami, where he led the defense in tackles in 1993. He left football before his junior year and took a job as a roadie and security man for his older brothers.
That job put him on the Smokin’ Grooves tour in 1996, where the Fugees were also playing. Speaking on the podcast All The Smoke in January 2025, Marley said he heard Hill’s voice from inside the tour bus before he ever saw her face. He was sitting in the driver’s seat one afternoon when she walked past carrying her guitar, and he tapped the horn. She looked back, and he smiled at her. A few days later she came toward the bus with his brothers, they reached out and touched hands, and that was the introduction.
Before the two of them had properly spoken, he told the same podcast, he opened his briefcase and showed her photographs of the two children he already had, from a marriage to Geraldine Khawly that had ended that year. He said he wanted her to know what she was walking into.

Zion David Marley was born on August 3, 1997, while Hill was in the middle of her run with the Fugees. She told the Los Angeles Times the following year that people around her had wanted her to wait, and that going ahead was one of the first choices she made for herself. The song “To Zion,” on 1998’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, is about that decision.
Wyclef Jean has since given his own version of that period. In his 2012 memoir Purpose, Jean wrote that he and Hill had an affair while he was married, that he believed Zion was his son, and that learning otherwise broke up the Fugees. Hill has never publicly answered that account.
Marley said on All The Smoke that he moved to New Jersey once Zion arrived. Voices around Hill were telling her he would sink her career, in his telling, so he went to hold the house together while she kept recording. His two older children, Eden and Nico, called Hill “Mommy Zion” until they were around twenty.
Four more children followed over the next decade.

Micah, the sixth child, and the father Hill has never named
Hill gave birth to a son, Micah, on July 23, 2011. Marley is not his father, and no father has ever been named publicly.
Hill addressed the reaction herself on Twitter, now X, in a statement Rolling Stone reported that July.
“We have had long periods of separation over the years, but our 5 children together remain a joy to both of us.”
Marley began seeing Brazilian model Isabeli Fontana that October, three months after Micah was born. The two were engaged by May 2012 and had called it off by early 2013.
Somewhere in this stretch the relationship ended for good, though the exact date has never been settled. Reporting from 2011 and 2012 described a partnership of about fifteen years finishing that year. People has since described the whole thing as on and off, running from the mid nineties into the 2010s.
Why Lauryn Hill and Rohan Marley never married
Talking to All The Smoke, Marley rejected the word separation altogether. He described a household where a king and a queen keep their own rooms and share a third space between them, an arrangement he traced to what he had learned about the Ethiopian imperial household. Both of them were in their twenties at the time, he said, and Hill was carrying the family financially while he was still working out what he would do for a living. Blame for the ending was something he declined to accept, describing it instead in terms of independence and each of them needing a foundation of their own.
Mayowa posted a follow up video saying that account did not satisfy her.
Marley had less to say for himself in 2013, in an Open Magazine interview reported by The Voice.
“I feel sad that I loved her so much and I faltered in expressing it to her somehow.”
Does Lauryn Hill have a husband now?
She does not. Hill has never married, and she has not spoken publicly about being with anyone since the relationship with Marley ended.
Marley married Brazilian model Barbara Fialho in March 2019 and divorced her the following year. Essence reported in August 2026 that he became engaged to Maytee Martinez in 2025. Counting his marriage to Khawly, which ran from 1993 to 1996, he has been married twice and engaged three times, never to Hill.
What Hill has said in 2026
Hill has talked about Marley twice this year, after long stretches of saying nothing about him at all.
In May, on his 52nd birthday, she posted a carousel of photographs of the two of them with the children and called him her protector and defender. “For those who didn’t know better, @romarley never cheated on me,” she wrote. Marley replied in the comments that they may not live under the same roof, but the love is the same.
In late June, BET gave Hill the network’s first Living Legend Icon Award. Zion, Selah and YG performed during the tribute, alongside Wyclef Jean, Nas, Queen Latifah, SZA and Doechii. Hill thanked each of them by name afterward and wrote that the love in the room was something she would carry with her for a long time.
Then came Mayowa’s video. Hill accepted part of the criticism, agreeing that some of her music had a self deprecating streak and saying there were reasons for it. The rest she turned down. Neither of them had come to the other clean, she wrote, both were working through things they had brought with them, and she tries to leave room for people still fighting their own battles.
“We don’t meet people as blank slates, they have pasts and past hurts,” she wrote.
Thirty years after a tour bus in 1996, there is still no marriage certificate with either of their names on it.
