Who Is Mirtha Jung?

Mirtha Jung is the former wife of George Jung, the American cocaine smuggler whose life inspired the 2001 film Blow. She was born in Cuba on December 3, 1952, with the family name Calderón, and moved to the United States as a young woman.

She had finished school and was waiting tables when she met George in Colombia in the mid 1970s, introduced through the contacts he had built moving cocaine. She was in her early twenties. He was ten years older and already years into the trade. By her family’s account she was engaged to someone else when they met. She broke it off, and they married in 1977.

Their daughter, Kristina Sunshine Jung, was born on August 1, 1978. By Kristina’s own account, published years later, Mirtha used cocaine throughout the pregnancy, and the delivery was dangerous because of it.

The Arrest That Saved Her

The law caught up with her at the end of the 1970s. She was arrested on drug charges and sent to federal prison for roughly three years, with Kristina young enough to be raised by relatives while she was gone.

Prison is what pulled her out. She got sober behind bars, and by Kristina’s account she never used again. The marriage did not survive it. Mirtha and George divorced in 1984, and he built a life afterward with a woman named Ronda, who was at his side when he died.

That recovery is the reason her story bends away from everyone else’s around George. She left the money and the cocaine behind and did not go back, while the men who built the empire kept paying for it for the rest of their lives.

What the Film Blow Got Wrong

Most people know her only through a film she had no part in making. Blow opened in April 2001, directed by Ted Demme and based on Bruce Porter’s book about George. It was made for $30 million and took about $83.3 million at the box office. Johnny Depp played George. Penélope Cruz played Mirtha, in her biggest American role to that point.

The movie shaped how the public sees her, and parts of it do not hold up.

• Mirtha was born in Cuba. Penélope Cruz played her with a Colombian accent she spent weeks learning, one the real woman never had.
• George never sat across a table from Pablo Escobar. Judicial records and declassified intelligence assessments tie his cartel connection to Carlos Lehder, the trafficker he met in a Connecticut prison in 1974. The Escobar meetings were written for the screen.
• The script took liberties. Mirtha has said it did not match her real life. Roger Ebert’s 2001 review describes a moment in which her character gets George arrested by losing her temper in the car, the kind of thing she has questioned.

To prepare, Depp visited George in prison. No one made a comparable trip to understand the woman Cruz was about to play.

The Friendship Behind the Book

The part of her life the film never reached began after the cameras were gone. She and Ted Demme, the director, became close friends.

On January 13, 2002, Demme collapsed during a celebrity basketball game in Santa Monica and died at 38. The Los Angeles County coroner found a small amount of cocaine in his body, which may have triggered the heart attack. The man who directed a film about cocaine was killed in part by the drug. Mirtha had been away from it for more than twenty years.

Losing him is what eventually moved her to talk. In 2018 she and Kristina published Recovery from Blow, a book that opens with the phone call telling her he was in the hospital. It is the closest she has come to giving her own account of those years.

The last few years were hard on the family. In January 2021, Kristina’s daughter, Athena Romina Karan, died in a car accident at 19. Four months later, on May 5, 2021, George Jung died at his home in Weymouth, Massachusetts, at 78, from liver and kidney failure.

George spent his final years still living off the name Boston George, decades after the cocaine stopped paying. His former wife wanted none of it. She had already done the one thing almost no one else in that world managed, which was to walk away from it and stay gone.
