Who Is Lola Simone Rock? Age, Life in Paris, and What We Actually Know

When Selective Outrage went live on Netflix on March 4, 2023, Chris Rock’s daughter Lola found out something about her own high school years that her father had never told her: he had arranged her expulsion.

Rock revealed that night that when Lola was caught drinking on a class trip to Portugal, while her mother Malaak Compton-Rock was working to keep her enrolled, he had gone to the school and asked the administration to throw his daughter out. Neither Lola nor her mother knew what he had done. Rock disclosed it years later, to a live Netflix audience.

What Lola thought about watching it is something she has never said.

Who Is Lola Simone Rock?

Lola Simone Rock is the eldest daughter of comedian and filmmaker Chris Rock and entrepreneur and activist Malaak Compton-Rock. Born on June 28, 2002, in New York City and raised in Alpine, New Jersey, she is 23 years old and has been based in Paris since 2020, where she is pursuing culinary studies.

Her parents married in November 1996, separated in December 2014, and finalized their divorce in August 2016. Rock acknowledged infidelity during the marriage in a 2017 Rolling Stone interview and in his 2018 Netflix special Tamborine.

The Childhood Question That Became a Sundance Film

Around 2006, when Lola was four or five years old, Rock was driving through Alpine with his daughter and one of her white classmates in the back seat. Lola kept telling the girl how good her hair was. He kept his voice even, told her her hair was beautiful, and moved on.

He told Oprah later: “If I would have really reacted, then she would have a complex about her hair.”

Not long after, she asked him directly: “Daddy, why don’t I have good hair?” The question sent Rock to Harlem barbershops, Indian temples, scientific laboratories, and the Bronner Brothers Hair Show in Atlanta. The result was Good Hair, directed by Jeff Stilson, which won the Sundance Special Jury Prize and opened in theaters in October 2009.

Lola was six when it screened at Sundance. Her name is not in the credits.

The Portugal Trip and the Expulsion Secret

During her high school years, Lola joined a class trip to Portugal at the private New Jersey school she attended. She and a group of classmates were caught drinking. The other parents hired lawyers. Malaak wanted legal representation as well.

Rock went to the school administration.

“I need you to kick my daughter out of this school. I need my Black child to learn her lesson right now.”

He said nothing to either of them. Malaak spent the incident working to keep Lola enrolled, not knowing Rock had already asked for the opposite. Lola transferred and eventually graduated in June 2020 from the Bergen Passaic chapter of Jack & Jill of America, an organization dedicated to developing young African-American leaders through civic engagement and community service.

Rock held the secret for years and disclosed it in Selective Outrage.

The Tattoo, the Graduation, and Paris

On June 28, 2020, Lola turned 18. She and her father marked the occasion at Bang Bang tattoo shop in New York City, where both were tattooed for the first time. Rock, then 55, chose a Jean Michel Basquiat crown on his right shoulder. Lola chose a dinosaur wearing the same crown in the same spot. Bang Bang posted about it on Instagram: “First tattoo for King @chrisrock and his wonderful daughter.”

Malaak announced the next chapter on Instagram that same month:

“My first born child Lola Simone has graduated from high school and turned 18. I cannot believe we have reached these milestones. But I could not be prouder of the young woman she has become and am excited for her to begin university in Europe.”

In a separate post, Malaak described Lola’s “love language” as food and travel, writing that she “sees life through the lens of communicating through food, culture, and community.” Lola moved to Paris for culinary studies that summer. By January 2023, Malaak confirmed on Instagram that both daughters were back at university after a holiday break.

Will Smith at the Graduation

On June 3, 2020, a few weeks before Lola’s 18th birthday, Will Smith appeared on screen at her graduation ceremony. The event was split between a parking lot and a Zoom call because of the pandemic, and Smith’s appearance had been arranged by Malaak as a surprise.

On March 27, 2022, Smith walked onto the stage at the 94th Academy Awards and struck Chris Rock across the face.

Comedian Leslie Jones confirmed publicly that the Rock family went to counseling in the aftermath. Lola has not commented on the incident.

Where Is Lola Simone Rock Now?

The last confirmed public appearance of Rock’s eldest daughter was on October 3, 2023, at the Chanel Spring/Summer 2024 show during Paris Fashion Week at Grand Palais Ephรฉmรจre. She sat in the front row next to her father, dressed entirely in the brand. Women’s Wear Daily listed her by name in its front row coverage.

After the show, she returned to Paris. She has not been publicly photographed or interviewed since.

What is confirmed about Lola as of June 2026:

  • Based in Paris since 2020, studying culinary arts
  • Described by her mother as someone whose identity centers on food, culture, and travel
  • Last confirmed public appearance: Chanel Paris Fashion Week, October 3, 2023
  • No known public social media accounts
  • In February 2025, Chris Rock attended the SNL 50th Anniversary Special with her younger sister Zahra. Lola was not there
  • That same spring, Zahra attended the Vanity Fair Oscar Party with their father. Lola was absent from that as well

Chris Rock told People in 2007 that everything he had done since having children was better than what came before. In a 2014 New York Magazine profile, he said: “My children saved me from my miserable self.”

Over more than two decades, he has referenced Lola by name in stand-up specials, a Sundance documentary, and interviews. She has been photographed and written about since she was four years old. Through all of it, she has not once spoken publicly about her own life.

She turns 24 on June 28. There is no reason to expect she will say anything about it.
